Dog attack neighbour: 'I had to hit dog with a shovel'

A neighbour has described how he tried to stop a savage dog attack on a teenager.

The man, who does not want to be identified, said he had never seen anything like it before:

"The dog wasn't going to stop until the child was dead. The only time the dog did stop was when the child passed out. I kicked the dog and it turned on me. I had to slam the door shut behind me. Eventually I hit it with a shovel, that's when the police came. "
