The daughter and son-in-law of an elderly couple who were found buried in their own garden have appeared in court charged with their murders.

Susan Patricia Edwards, 55, and her husband, Christopher John Edwards, 57, appeared at Nottingham Crown Court charged with the murders of William and Patricia Wycherley between May 1 and May 31 1998.

The remains of Mr and Mrs Wycherley, who would now be 100 and 79 respectively, were found buried in the back garden of a house in Mansfield following a tip-off.

Post-mortem tests carried out on the remains have revealed that each person died as a result of being shot.

A provisional trial date has been set for June 2 next year and no application for bail was made, with both defendants remanded in custody to next appear at Nottingham Crown Court on November 15 for a preliminary hearing.

Garden bodies suspects remanded into custody

The daughter and son-in-law of an elderly couple who disappeared 15 years ago have been remanded in custody until Monday after appearing in court charged with their murders.

Susan Edwards, 55, wearing a black sweater and trousers, spoke only to confirm her name, age and address at Nottingham Magistrates' Court this morning during a brief hearing.

Her husband, Christopher Edwards, 57. dressed in burgundy trousers, a black sweater and wearing glasses, also confirmed the same details from the dock.

No application for bail was made.

Formal identification has yet to be confirmed but detectives believe the remains are that of William and Patricia Wycherley who lived at the house in the 1990s.

Pair in court tomorrow charged with murder of couple

Susan and Christopher Edwards will remain in custody until their appearance before Nottingham magistrates tomorrow, police said.

The pair, of no fixed address, have been charged with murder after the remains of a man and woman were found buried in the back garden of a house in Mansfield on 9 October.

Following a post-mortem examination, a Home Office pathologist determined both died as a result of being shot.
