Body lay in well 'for two years'

A body found in a well outside a home in Surrey had been been there for around two years, police now believe. Seven men who were arrested on suspicion of murder have been released on bail.

Police: Unidentified body had been in well for two years

Police investigating a body found in a well in Surrey have established that the victim was bound up before being place in the well by a third party around two years ago.

Detective Chief Inspector Cliff Lyons, who leads the investigation, revealed:

Our enquiries continue to try and establish the identity of this male. These enquiries have included reviewing missing person reports but this process may take some time.

I would like to thank the public for their positive response to our appeals so far and specifically those in the local community who have been supportive throughout the disruption caused by police and media in their neighbourhood.

Given the complex nature of this investigation, it is likely that forensic work at the property will continue for a further month as we attempt to secure all available evidence.

Police: Body found in well had been assaulted

A man whose body was found in a well had been assaulted, police said last night.

An initial post mortem examination did not prove conclusive in providing a cause of death and further tests will be carried out, Scotland Yard said.

However, the examination did reveal injuries consistent with an assault, a spokesman added.

Seven men aged between 21 and 27 who were arrested on suspicion of murder have been bailed to a date in late December, pending further investigation.

Teenage gardener found 'man's body' in garden well

A teenage boy who found a body in a garden well has described the moment he saw an "adult male" covered in tarpaulin as he cleared up outside of a house in an affluent area of Surrey.

Jack Duncan, 17, told the Croydon Advertiser he and Rory Mulholland, 21, had been asked to work in the garden on Friday and noticed something "covered in tarpaulin" on the top of the well.

“I didn't think it was a body, I didn't know what it was," Duncan told the newspaper. “Then I saw the shape of two legs, and then a backside, and I realised it was a body."

It was definitely a man. You could tell by the size of his thighs, he had builder’s legs. It was definitely an adult. It still had skin and hair, so couldn't have been there for very long.
