McQueen: Oscar nominations 'testament to hard work'

Receiving nine Oscar nominations for 12 Years A Slave is a "testament to all our hard work", British director Steve McQueen told the Hollywood Reporter.

McQueen said: "I'm extraordinarily happy for all the cast and crew of our 12 Years a Slave family. This has been an amazing ride, and to receive nine nominations from the Academy is testament to all of the hard work. And for that I am truly grateful."

Oscar nomination for film 'double cause for pride'

Receiving an Oscar nomination for documentary feature The Square is "double cause for pride", said British-born actor Khalid Abdalla, who stars as one of the main protagonists in the film.

Jehane Noujaim's documentary is based in Tahrir Square, in Cairo and follows the journey of three protesters, each from a different background.

Actress Judi Dench has said she is "proud" to have been nominated for the best actress Oscar, for her role in Philomena.

She said: "This is just the loveliest news. I'm so happy for everybody involved, and so proud to have been part of the wonderful experience that Philomena has been."
