RSPCA in prior contact at address where baby mauled

The RSPCA has issued the following statement after an 11-month-old girl was mauled to death at a home in Blackburn yesterday evening.

We are extremely saddened to hear about this incident and our thoughts are with the family of the baby girl involved.

Two years ago the RSPCA was contacted about a cat which had been attacked and died after going into a garden at this address. There was no suggestion that the incident was anything other than an accident and no further action was taken.

Later that year the RSPCA was again contacted regarding concerns for the health of a litter of puppies at the address. An officer attended and the dogs were all under veterinary care and receiving the treatment they required.

Two puppies were signed over to the RSPCA, which were subsequently found new homes.

There were no children living at the address at that time.

Killer dog 'aggressive and dangerous'

The dog that mauled a baby to death in Blackburn has been described as "very aggressive and dangerous" by a neighbour, who said the animal had previously entered his garden by breaking the fence.

Locals have claimed they reported dangerous dogs at the address of the killing to police.

Chief Superintendent Chris Bithell said Lancashire Police are making inquiries to see whether there have been previous issues with the dog, but that "at this moment it would be too early to speculate on that".

Baby mauled 'upstairs while couple were downstairs'

The mother of a baby mauled to death by a dog was downstairs with her boyfriend at the time, police have said.

Chief Superintendent Chris Bithell of Lancashire Police called the incident "absolutely horrific" and said both suspects will be questioned by detectives today.

The baby was upstairs in a bed in one of the front bedrooms and the two people who are currently in custody, they were downstairs when the attack took place.
