A 38-year-old mother has been arrested on suspicion of overlaying after a newborn baby girl was found dead.

A 38-year-old mother has been arrested on suspicion of overlaying after a newborn baby girl was found dead.

The unnamed woman was arrested at her home in Chesham, Buckinghamshire this morning in connection with the unexplained death, Thames Valley Police said.

It is understood the baby was just a few weeks old at the time of her death.

Police have not released any further details, but overlaying is the term used when a baby is suffocated when somebody lies on them while in bed.

A baby has been found dead after police were called to a property in Chesham in Buckinghamshire this morning. The baby's mother has been taken to hospital where her condition is described as life-threatening.

In a statement, Thames Valley Police said:

"We were called to an address in Deansway, Chesham at 9.30am. Officers are currently attending the unexplained death of a young baby. The mother of the baby has been taken to hospital. The investigation is currently in a very early stage. Further details will be released when available."
