A man convicted of killing a young Welsh couple in Antigua has died after being shot by police during a prison escape attempt, according to media on the Caribbean island.

The Antigua Observer said Avie Howell, who was injured when police recaptured him after he escaped from jail, died an hour after being caught this morning.

Families 'relieved' after honeymoon killer recaptured

The capture of an escaped prisoner convicted of murdering newlyweds Ben and Catherine Mullay has been welcomed by the couple's families

Mr Mullay's mother Marilyn, from Pontardawe, South Wales, said:

We are very relieved that he was caught. We were very concerned and upset when we heard he had escaped.

Our fear was that he might leave the island and not only evade justice, but end up hurting someone else.

Escaped killer 'shot' before he was captured in Antigua

Corporal Frankie Thomas, of The Royal Police Force of Antigua & Barbuda said Avie Howell was captured in the countryside by the police:

I can confirm Avie Howell has been caught. He was shot following a confrontation with officers.

I do not know the extent of his injuries at this stage, but he has been taken to hospital.

In the meantime, we would like to thank the public and the media for assisting us in locating Howell.

Escaped honeymoon killer caught in Antigua

An escaped murderer who killed a British couple on their honeymoon has been caught, Antiguan police have said.

Avie Howell, along with Kaniel Martin, was convicted of murdering newlyweds Ben and Catherine Mullay, from Pontardawe, South Wales, during their honeymoon in Antigua in 2008.

He escaped from prison yesterday, along with another inmate who was not connected to the murder, by jumping over a 30 foot wall.

Officers say Howell was shot during a confrontation with a local officer in a remote part of the island around an hour ago.

Avie Howell, along with Kaniel Martin, was convicted of murdering newlyweds Ben and Catherine Mullay, from Pontardawe, South Wales, during their honeymoon in Antigua in 2008.

Counsellor Jamal Wright, based at St John's police station in Antigua, said the prisoner escaped along with another inmate by jumping over a 30ft wall.

"Avie Howell escaped from Her Majesty's Prison at about 6am on Thursday along with Kenroy Laurie Marshall.

"Apparently they used a sharp implement to cut out a portion of mesh and jumped over the northern prison wall, which is about 30ft high.

"I understand the victims' families will be very concerned,"
