John Whittingdale added that he was "aware" Charles Napier had been charged with an offence alleged to have occurred over 35 years ago.

Mr Whittingdale said: "I have no knowledge of this, particularly as I had only just left school at that time.

"However, obviously I recognise that this is a serious matter and that the law must take its course."

Alleged sex abuse charges relate to offences in 1970s

The half-brother of Conservative MP John Whittingdale has been charged with one count of inciting a child to commit an act of gross indecency as part of Operation Cayacos, Scotland Yard said.

Charles Napier, 67, from Dorset is among two men charged in connection to alleged historic sex abuse. The charges are said to relate to offences in the late 1970s when the victim was 11-years-old.

Richard Alston, 69, and Napier have both been bailed to appear at Westminster Magistrates Court on July 29.
