It took the Hatton Garden gang two attempts with two separate drills to bore through the vault wall and carry out the largest burglary in English legal history.
The raiders managed to bore a hole 50cm deep, 25cm high, and 45cm wide during two separate visits in a raid which the Met Police described as an "audacious and brazen burglary that was some three years in the planning."
ITV News has put together an exact reconstruction of the vault's main defence - 20 inches of solid concrete wall that the raiders had to drill through:
The gang used the lift shaft to access the basement and disable the alarm before getting to work on drilling through the vault wall.
But they were unable to gain access to the vault after the first night of drilling because it was blocked off by a metal cabinet.
They returned with different equipment to finish the job.
