The average British woman aged between 35 and 69 has up to 252 negative thoughts about her body every week, according to an experiment carried out by ITV1’s Tonight programme.

The experiment, headed up by TV presenter Sherrie Hewson, was conducted to discover how negatively women feel about their bodies as they go through the aging process.

Tonight: Age Before Beauty saw 100 women aged between 35 and 69 given clickers which they used to register the amount of times in a week they had negative thoughts about their body image.

Over the seven days the average result for the 100 women was 252 clicks and Sherrie Hewson clicked 1,400 times.

The Think It Click It campaign was devised by keep-fit instructor Irene Vestry and psychologist Emma Kenny because of their concerns about the pressures on older women to remain youthful.

Presented by Fiona Foster, the programme explores whether our looks obsessed society is contributing to ageism.
