Tonight: Health records for sale, Monday 19th October

Published: Monday, 19 October 2009, 1:34PM

What if details of private medical consultations – no matter how sensitive or intimate  - were available on the open market, for sale to anyone with deep enough pockets?

Tonight reveals that British medical data is being sold and goes to India to expose some of the individuals responsible for selling it.

Nearly 5,000 miles from the hospital they originally attended UK patients’ records are being traded by data brokers operating on India’s information blackmarket. The brokers responsible offer a highly sophisticated service, even promising to break information down into disease catagories such as cancer, heart attacks and diabetes.

The programme meets some of the British patients whose data has been compromised and ask whether more could be done to prevent what is perhaps the most private and confidential information that exists about you ending up in the hands of criminals on another continent.
