Just over 1,700 people applied for just eight jobs at a new Costa Coffee branch in Nottingham.
Costa said they were "shocked" to receive 1,701 applications for the three full-time and five part-time posts after advertising in early December.
In an indication of how tough the jobs market remains, the position attracted applicants that included new graduates and former managers.
The coffee chain also received applications from former employees of HMV and Clinton Cards, who were both forced to call in administrators.
Business is booming for Costa Coffee, with the High Street chain recording a like-for-like sales increase of 7.1% and a total sales increase of 25.5% in the third quarter.
The expanding Costa brand helped boost its owner Whitbread, Britain's biggest hotel and coffee shop operator, into posting a 3.3% rise in the three months to November 29.
