Whip: Israel tweet neither 'proportionate nor precise'

Liberal Democrat chief whip Alistair Carmichael wrote a letter to MP David Ward saying the party had removed the whip from him after he posted a tweet about Israel that was neither "proportionate nor precise".

During the meeting, we put it to you that your most recent statement - which specifically questions the continuing existence of the State of Israel - is neither proportionate nor precise.

Unfortunately, we considered your explanation to be unconvincing and it did not satisfy us that you understood the importance of conducting the debate on this issue at all times and in all places in terms that are proportionate and precise.

He went on to inform Mr Ward that the party had "decided to suspend the Liberal Democrat whip" from him.

Liberal Democrats suspend MP over tweet

The Liberal Democrat party have suspended the whip from MP David Ward, who has clashed with the party's leadership over comments questioning the continued existence of the state of Israel.

Mr Ward has had the whip withdrawn until 13th September.

It follows a post on Twitter in which the Bradford East MP said: "Am I wrong or are am I right? At long last the #Zionists are losing the battle - how long can the #apartheid State of #Israel last?"
