Man charged with £1.2m theft to appear in court

A man charged with the theft of security van, which contained £1.2 million in 1993, is to appear at Southwark Crown Court today.

Eddie Maher, 57, originally from South Woodham Ferrers, Essex, was arrested in the US and deported in May last year.

He was charged after the Securicor van he was driving disappeared from outside Lloyds Bank, Felixstowe on January 22, 1993.

Maher's partner, Deborah Brett, 47, his sister, Margaret Francis, 64, and a 54-year-old man, from Woodford Green, east London, are all currently on bail after being arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender and conspiracy to commit theft.
