Transport Secretary faces questions over cancelled West Coast Main Line bid

The Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin faces questions from a senior MP over the West Coast Main Line rail franchise, which was cancelled last week after the discovery of significant "flaws".

Transport Committee chairman Louise Ellman MP said she had written to Mr McLoughlin raising a number of questions about the cancellation of the competition.

FirstGroup had been set to take over the running of the London to Scotland line from Virgin Rail in December.

Mr McLoughlin has ordered two independent reviews into the competition process because "deeply regrettable and completely unacceptable mistakes" made by his department.
