The residents of a small Dutch town are clearing up the debris after a party on Friday night turned into a riot. Thousands of revellers descended on the town of Haren, after an invitation for a 16-year-old girl's birthday party went viral when it was posted on Facebook, authorities said.
Local prosecutor Hessel Schuth said 34 people were arrested on Friday night and in the early hours of Saturday morning and would be prosecuted for public order offences. Dutch media reported that the party was originally planned as a small celebration.
Piles of rubbish and debris littered the town's main shopping street and many businesses had their windows smashed. Rioters also damaged parked cars and threw bricks and litter on the streets. Some people sustained minor injuries.
