Pit crew member mowed down by Indy car during race

Pit crew member Todd Phillips escaped with six stitches in his leg after being run over by Francesco Dracone’s car during an IndyCar race on Sunday.

The accident took place during the inaugural IndyCar Grand Prix in Louisiana, when Dracone's car spun out of control and his back tyre flipped Phillips into the air.

Dale Coyle racing tyre changer, Phillips, posted on Facebook following the accident:

"I guess the cat is out of the bag. I can't tell you how lucky I am to walk away with only 6 stitches!"

Scottish IndyCar driver in hospital after huge crash

Scottish IndyCar driver Dario Franchitti is in hospital following a huge crash at the IndyCar Series Grand Prix in Houston.

The four-time series champion smashed into the safety fence after colliding with fellow driver Takuma Sato on Sunday.

Franchetti, 40, suffered a concussion, fractured right ankle and a fractured vertebra and is recovering in hospital.

The driver's brother and fellow racer, Marino Franchitti, tweeted that he was on his way to the hospital to see his brother: "Thanks for all the kind messages. Hope everyone in the crowd is OK, sounded awful."

An IndyCar official and two spectators were also taken to hospital for treatment, while 11 other fans were evaluated by medical staff on site.
