Celebrities gather to mourn Joan Rivers

Mourners including Sarah Jessica Parker and Whoopi Goldberg have gathered in New York for the funeral of comedian Joan Rivers, who died on Thursday aged 81.

Other celebrities including US "shock jock" Howard Stern are attending the ceremony at Temple Emanu-El on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan, while thousands of fans have lined the surrounding streets.

Roger Stern, of New York radio station 1010 WINS, tweeted this picture of the temple.

Comedian Joan Rivers will be laid to rest in a private funeral ceremony later today.

The 81-year-old comedy legend died on September 4, a week after suffering a cardiac arrest during an outpatient operation.

Her invitation-only funeral will be held at Temple Emanu-El, a landmark synagogue on New York's Fifth Avenue where she was a member of the congregation.

Senior Rabbi Joshua M. Davidson, who will conduct the service, said in a statement: "We mourn with her family, friends and all those millions to whom she brought laughter and joy."

The 81-year-old comedy legend will have an invitation-only funeral at Temple Emanu-El, a landmark synagogue on New York's Fifth Avenue where she was a member of the congregation.

No details of the service were released but Rivers once joked she wanted her funeral to be a big showbiz affair complete with Meryl Streep crying in different accents.

She said: "I want paparazzi and I want publicists making a scene! I want it to be Hollywood all the way."

Prince Charles: Joan Rivers is 'utterly irreplaceable'

The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall are deeply saddened to hear of the death of Joan Rivers, a Clarence House spokesperson said.

Prince Charles said:

Joan Rivers was an extraordinary woman with an original and indefatigable spirit, an unstoppable sense of humour and an enormous zest for life.

She will be hugely missed and utterly irreplaceable.

Joan Rivers was a guest at Charles and Camilla's wedding in 2005 and performed for at the "We Are Most Amused" comedy gala, in aid of The Prince's Trust, for the Prince of Wales' 60th birthday.

Clinic under investigation over Joan Rivers operation

The New York state health department is investigating the circumstances surrounding Joan Rivers' cardiac arrest during a routine procedure at a Manhattan doctor's office last week.

Spokesman James O'Hare said the department is looking into "the whole matter", declining to discuss specifics.

Rivers was rushed to hospital after the complications during surgery, and died today aged 81.
