Justin Timberlake heads MTV nominations

Justin Timberlake and rap duo Macklemore & Ryan Lewis headed the nominations as the shortlist for the MTV European Music Awards were announced.

Both acts are up for five awards at the event which is being staged in Amsterdam in November.

Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber,and Robin Thicke each compete for four prizes, as does Miley Cyrus, who caused a stir with a raunchy routine at MTV's Video Music Awards in the United States last month.

One Direction are in the running for three prizes along with fellow Brits Rudimental, while Bastille, Rita Ora, and Calvin Harris are among those competing for two prizes. at the event to be staged on November 10.

US stars Macklemore & Lewis are up for their first MTV EMAs and are shortlisted for best new act, best hip hop, best song for their UK chart-topper Thrift Shop, best US act and and best world stage for their performance at London's Wireless Festival in the summer.

Timberlake is up for best male, best live act, best US act and best video for Mirrors, as well as his best look nod.

The American popstar will perform alongside Robbie Williams, Muse, Ben Howard, One Direction, Mumford & Sons and Emeli Sande.

Mumford & Sons, Alt J and Emeli Sande lead the nominations with three each, as they look to win a Damien Hirst designed Brits statue.

The Brit Awards 2013 will be hosted by James Cordon at the O2 Arena on Wednesday 20 February. The awards ceremony will be shown exclusively on ITV1.
