The chairman of Barclays bank will face MPs on the Treasury Select Committee on Thursday - a hearing that is expected to go ahead irrespective of his decision to quit.
Marcus Agius will announce his resignation at 7am today after informing fellow board members of his decision yesterday, according to reports.
According to the Guardian, Marcus Agius, the chairman of Barclays, is resigning in a move intended to take some of the pressure off the embattled bank's chief executive Bob Diamond, who has faced calls to quit in the wake of the interest rate fixing scandal.
Marcus Agius is poised to resign as chairman of Barclays today, in the hope that his departure will take the sting out of mounting criticism from politicians and shareholders over the UK bank's role in the price-fixing of interbank lending rates, reports the Financial Times.
