Actor Shia LaBeouf has checked into rehab for treatment for alcoholism, his publicist has said.

Melissa Kates said the Transformers star had voluntary asked for outpatient care.

It comes after LaBeouf, 28, was arrested last week for using obscene language and becoming aggressive outside New York's Studio 54.

In a statement Kates added: "He understands that these recent actions are a symptom of a larger health problem and he has taken the first of many necessary steps towards recovery."

LaBeouf, 28, was reportedly escorted out of the theatre by police during the play "Cabaret", after making a disturbance and using obscene language when asked to leave when asked by security.

"He was being rather difficult and combative, verbally to the point where security guards asked him to please leave the premises and he refused. Police were called and he was detained and arrested," NYPD spokesman George Tsourovakas said.

A representative for LaBeouf could not be reached for comment when contacted by Reuters news agency.
