Mayor sacks six cabinet members

Stuart Drummond says all of the members had worked on financial plans for nine months which included privatising services such as I.T.

“Unfortunately that gave me a tough call to make, as there are a lot of tough decisions coming up and I put together a cabinet that has extra responsibility and needs to be able to make those decisions. I need people who are willing to put their neck on the line."

Mr Drummond says that it could impact on budget cuts later on, possibly even impacting on job losses. He also claimed some members didn't turn out because they were threatened with expulsion from the labour party if they voted in favour of the plans.

However, at least one member of the cabinet says that's not the case. Robbie Payne was one of the councillors who was sacked from his position on the cabinet. He told ITV: "I was travelling back from abroad so by the time I'd got home the council meeting had already started and I was in no position to actually come. It's up to the mayor the mayor gets paid the big bucks he makes the big decisions and he's done what he's done and fair play to him."
