Six British soldiers are missing presumed dead when their armoured vehicle was hit by an explosion while they were on patrol in Helmand province in southern Afghanistan.

There have been 404 British military deaths in Afghanistan caused by violence or accidents since the U.S.-led military intervention began in 2001.

Today Defence Secretary Philip Hammond paid tribute to the missing soldiers but added that Britain still had a vital role to play in Afghanistan.
