Man dies in Gateshead bus crash

An elderly man has died after being hit by a bus in Gateshead.

Police said the man - in his 70s - was struck by the Go North-East 51 bus on Springwell Road, Wrekenton at around 7:30am.

The man was trapped under the vehicle as emergency services tried to get him out. It's believed he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The road was closed for several hours as ambulances and fire services attended.

A Go North-East spokesperson said:

"There was seven passengers on the bus at the time and no one else was hurt.

"An internal investigation is underway with the police and VOSA, the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency."
