Region's tourist hot spots win awards

The North East was one of the big winners in this year's VisitEngland annual awards.

The Tall Ships race in Hartlepool was named the Best Tourism Event of the Year, Rockliffe Hall Large Hotel of the Year, and Beamish Large Visitor Attraction of the Year.

Other winners were the Great North Hancock museum for Access for All; a bronze prize for Dowfold House B&B for Bed and Breakfast /Guest Accommodation of the Year, a silver for the Seafield Caravan Park, Northumberland; a silver for Rudding Parl, Yorkshire for Large Hotel of the Year.

The winner of the Tourism Superstar of the Year was Alan Fildler, a taxi driver from Newcastle and David Heatherington, from Weardale, County Durham, was Highly Commended in the same category.
