When John Ord, from Gateshead, got back from a trip to town last Saturday, he had a sinking feeling. He realised he had forgotten to do a number of jobs for his wife Karen. Not only had he not paid the gas and electricity bills, he had also forgotten to put on a lottery ticket.
A trip to the newsagent sorted that. However, his wife of 20 years knew he would forget: so she put a ticket on as well.
The couple used the same numbers they play every week, based on birthdays. And when 16, 18, 20, 25, 29 and the bonus ball 15 came up, they knew they were in for a windfall.

Although the couple have kept the celebrations low key, they do plan to throw a big party for family and friends. They also hope to buy a new car and enjoy a holiday somewhere hot.
John bought his winning ticket from a newsagent at Heworth Metro station, while Karen bought hers from Felling Post Office. Both shops can now display signs in their windows celebrating the win.
