More high quality jobs needed in Sunderland

A new report, published today, by the independent think tank, the Centre for Cities, says it would make sense for mid sized cities such as Sunderland to group together with places like Preston and Derby to push for government funds to revitalise their city centres.

In the decade leading up to the financial crash in 2008, Sunderland saw an overall 10 per cent rise in private sector jobs (above the national average).

But those jobs were created on the outskirts of the city along the A19 corridor in places like Doxford Business Park.

The author of today's report, economist Paul Swinney, who grew up on Wearside says the long term future of the city will depend on its ability to create high quality jobs in the city centre.
