Sunderland AFC this morning confirmed Spanish defender Carlos Cuéllar has joined the club.
The 30 year-old, who arrives on a Bosman free transfer, has agreed terms until summer 2014.
The Madrid-born centre back left Aston Villa at the end of his contract, having made 94 Premier League appearances for the Midlands club.
Cuéllar will be reunited with former manager Martin O’Neill on Wearside, four years after the current Black Cats boss took him to Villa Park from Glasgow Rangers.
Cuéllar began his career with Spanish regional fourth division outfit CD Calahorra, rising through the leagues with moves to Segunda División club Numancia and La Liga side Osasuna.
He signed for Glasgow Rangers in July 2007 and won the SPL Player of the Year award during his one and only season north of the border, before moving to the Barclays Premier League with O’Neill’s Villa in August 2008.
The news comes 24 hours after Sunderland confirmed the exit of George McCartney. The Northern Irish defender has joined West Ham United on a two year deal.
