Business Secretary Vince Cable is in the North East today visiting companies who are working to boost the manufacturing industry in the North East.
Mr Cable was joined by John Cridland from the Confederation of British Industry for the tour.
They visited three manufacturers who support the renewable energy sector including Soil Machine Dynamics in Wallsend.
Speaking after walking round the SMD plant Mr Cable said:
Mr Cable also visited the Offshore Group Newcastle and Northumbria Water. The three companies are part of one of the Government’s Enterprise Zones is becoming a regional hub for low carbon industries following diversification within the oil and gas industry.
The area, once mainly associated with major shipyard works, became an important location for the oil and gas industry as a convenient location for heavy manufacturing of energy infrastructure required in the North Sea.
Mr Cable and John Cridland see the North East as crucial for the growth of the renewable sector.
