A nursery remains closed following the death of three-year-old Lydia Bishop.
It was Lydia's first day at York College Nursery when she somehow became entangled in playground equipment and suffered serious injuries on Monday afternoon.
She was taken to York District Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
The nursery remains closed to allow staff and other children to come to terms with the tragedy and to allow investigators to discover what happened.
Officers were called to the area on Sim Balk Lane, York, at 2.35pm on Monday by the ambulance service.
The force spokeswoman said police did not believe there were any suspicious circumstances and it appeared that the girl has become entangled in a piece of play equipment. She urged anyone with information to contact them.
A spokesman from the City of York Council offered sympathies to those who knew the three-year-old girl.
