Nineteen-year-old in critical condition after Newcastle road accident

Police are investigating after a pedestrian was hit by a car in Newcastle in the early hours of Thursday morning.

The incident happened on the on the B1318 Great North Road, near Jesmond at 2:27am. The 19-year-old man sustained potentially life-threatening injuries, and was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary where he remains in a critical condition.

The road was closed between the A167(M) Central Motorway and the A189 Grandstand Road (Blue House Roundabout) for more than five hours as officers assessed the scene.

Three men, aged 28, 20 and 19, and two women, both 20, have all been arrested in connection with the incident.
