He may only be a few weeks old but already Mario the Mongoose has survived abandonment - and even learned to live with another species.

The intrepid carnivore was born in Kirkleatham Owl Centre near Redcar, but at just a few hours old was left 'cold and weak' by his mother.

He is now looked after by Centre Manager Craig Wesson and has even moved in with a group of friendly meerkats.

Mr Wesson said: "It's a round-the-clock job: he sleeps in a box by my bed with his little hot-water bottle, though there have been nights when he's cried that I've not let him sleep on the bed!"

Native to southern Africa, Yellow Mongoose live in small family groups, and quite often share the burrows of meerkats.
