Lifeboats launched 1,000 times

Volunteer crews from the Royal National Lifeboat Institution launched their lifeboats more than 1,000 times in 2012.

But lifeboat launches in the North of England were down by almost a fifth - partly because of the bad weather keeping people away from our beaches.

Almost half of the rescues were for recreational craft, a fifth were to help people in trouble on the shore and fewer than one in ten were for fishing and other commercial vehicles.

The RNLI crews have saved almost 140,000 lives since the organisation was founded in 1824.
