A schoolgirl with a spine that looked like she had a shark's fin sticking out of her back has had an 11-hour operation to correct the problem.

Emily Crosby's spine curved at a 90 degree angle at the top before twisting 50 degrees in the opposite direction.

The 13 year old, from Seaton Carew, was only alerted to the problem after her dance teacher noticed there was something wrong with her back.

Doctors said it was one of the worst cases of scoliosis, or curvature of the spine, that they had ever seen.

Her lungs were becoming so crushed they could have been punctured if the condition had not been spotted.
