Only eight cases of stalking were reported to Northumbria Police last year, despite figures showing it annually affects more than 2 million people across the country.
Today (April 24) is the national stalking awareness day.
Police believe it is under-reported because victims don't realise how serious it can become.
They are now encouraging more victims to come forward and employers to recognise the warning signs.
