Bomb disposal teams brought into Newcastle University

Bomb disposal teams were called into Newcastle University at about 6pm Photo:

Police confirmed a student's room was being searched and an 18-year-old man had been arrested after potentially suspicious items were found at the INTO building at Newcastle University.

The building, which houses both classrooms and student accommodation, was evacuated at about 5pm. Bomb disposal teams were brought in and roads closed around the area, including the B1307, which is one of the main roads through Newcastle.

Police are currently searching a Newcastle University building. The investigation is in the early stages and is ongoing.

A man aged 18 has been arrested in connection with the investigation and is helping with enquiries.

Potentially suspicious items have been found and the building has been evacuated as a precaution so the items can be recovered and examined.

Enquiries are in the early stages and we are working closely with Newcastle University.

There is currently no cause for concern for students and the wider community.
