Weather: St Swithun's Day

What has our weather got in store? Photo: Tracey Laing

The legend goes like this:

St Swithun's Day

Essentially it claims the weather we see today will last for the next 40 days.

It is a poem that dates back centuries - but is there any truth in it?

Funnily enough the myth fails to stand up to scrutiny.

We have no records of forty days of drought or forty days with rainfall over the summer months.

Although there may be a small drop of reality in it.

This time in July tends to be when the Jet Stream settles down – leaving us with a general tone for the summer months.
