Former Durham MP Gerry Steinberg dies aged 70

Tributes have been paid to Gerry Steinberg, the former Labour MP for Durham City, who has died aged 70.

Mr Steinberg was the city's MP from 1987 until his retirement in 2005 and was given Freedom of the City of Durham that year.

His successor, Roberta Blackman-Woods, said she was very sorry to hear the sad news about his passing.

As MP and as a local councillor, he served the City of Durham constituency for many, many years and will be fondly remembered by many constituents for representing their interests in both Westminster and Durham.

He will also be remembered for his challenging presence on the Public Accounts Committee.

Our sincere condolences go to his family and friends."
