Snow falls thick and fast in the North East causing difficult driving conditions

The first heavy snowfall this season is falling thick and fast across the North East causing difficult driving conditions.

The A66 between Bowes and Brough is currently closed due to the heavy snow.

Durham Police telling urging people to find alternative routes as attempts to clear the snow have been unsuccessful.

The snow started to fall at around 1pm in Newcastle and is expected to last well into the afternoon.

Police forces across the region are urging people to drive carefully, saying that the snow falling on roads which are already wet are causing 'treacherous' driving conditions.

A spokesperson for the Met Office has said: "It is one Celsius in Newcastle at the moment...and Durham it is hovering at zero, making the perfect conditions for snow."
