NHS funded dance class launches for over 65s

Dance classes have been launched for the over 65s to help them stay on their feet and avoid falls.

The classes in Newcastle aim to improve balance, fitness and physical confidence. The organisers Helix Arts, an arts production company, wanted to use dance to encourage health and wellbeing.

Unusually, they bring together the creative world with the NHS. Newcastle Gateshead Clinical Commissioning Group - the body that plans the region's health services- fund the activities. Helix Arts were the only arts based group to get funding.

Choreographer Nadia Iftkhar said:

I think moving with a lot of other people is really special, there's a connection that happens but enjoyment of the movement and not really noticing that your exercising because you're enjoying the music or company or just the movement itself and it has a tendency to lift spirits a lot."
