A record number of five passenger ships in one day have visited the Port of Tyne.

Holland America Line's Koningsdam, the largest cruise ship ever to dock at North Shields at a length of 297.2 metres, was among the vessels carrying a combined total of more than ten thousand passengers through the terminal.

German-operated Aida Vita was followed by the arrival of Seven Seas Voyager, Koningsdam, the DFDS King Seaways and Astor.

The combined length of all five vessels is 1,043.90 metres (3,424.86 feet).

Andrew Moffat, Chief Executive Officer at Port of Tyne, said:

Whilst this is good news for the Port of Tyne, it is also very good for the region - the impact on the local economy is estimated at around £50 million each year, supporting 1,700 jobs.
