Planned Horden station gets Government funding

The leader of Durham County Council says the authority is delighted to be receiving money from the Government towards a new station at Horden.

The Department for Transport has given the green light for five stations, which will provide long term benefits to passengers and the wider economy.

The government will invest over £16 million in the schemes under the new stations fund, which gives local communities improved rail services.

Funding from Department for Transport

Horden Peterlee in County Durham will receive £4.4 million of DfT funding towards a scheme worth £10.55 million

The new station, which will have 2 platforms, will deliver improved access to employment opportunities to the area, which has low levels of car ownership, making it easy for people to get around.

It will be located on the Durham Coast Line between Seaham and Hartlepool.

The station, which we expect to be complete by 2020, will greatly enhance commuters’ ability to reach employment sites across the region and will be served by more than 20 trains a day heading north and south.

It will also act as a park and ride, with spaces for more than 100 commuters.

We believe it will serve as a significant focus for regeneration in this coastal community.

There is already considerable support for this project regionally, with funding already in place from the North East Combined Authority and ourselves, and it is good to see this has now been nationally recognised."
