Police are appealing for information after a family was assaulted by youths in Gateshead.

Just before 8pm on Thursday July 27, police received a report that a 62-year-old man was attacked as he was out jogging with his wife, their adult daughter and their pet dog.

They were jogging through Eslington Park when they were confronted by a group of around six teenage boys.

The group have originally asked for the family's pet dog as they ran alongside them towards the Team Valley but they soon became abusive.

Three of the males have continued to jog alongside the family across the bottom of Lobley Hill Road and onto Queensway in the north area of the Team Valley.

It is then that they have continued to goad the male jogger before punching him in the face and fracturing his jaw near to the Premier Inn. They then fled towards the Festival Park area.

The family have called emergency services before officers attended the scene.

The man received treatment in hospital and was understandably left very shaken. His wife and daughter were also very distressed.

Enquiries to identify the youths involved are ongoing and police are now appealing for help from the public to trace them.

The three male teenagers involved are described as all wearing dark hoodies and tracksuit pants and between 5ft5in and 5ft8in tall.
