Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez has stressed the importance of selling players that are surplus to requirements at the club before the transfer window closes next week.

Benitez has to sell players before he can buy them to balance the books, but also believes the size of his squad also makes his job more difficult.

The Spaniard signed a number of players to help Newcastle win an immediate return to the Premier League last season, but is now aiming to overhaul that squad to ensure they survive in the top flight.

Some of those players with no future at the club will feature in Wednesday’s Carabao Cup tie against Nottingham Forest with Benitez aiming to attract interest before August 31.

When you having so many players around it's not easy. You have players that know that they will leave and still they are around - how can you manage and control?

A lot of managers have had the same situation the difference is some teams need two or three players because they were already in the Premier League and us coming from the Championship we need to change more players and that means more people around."
