Police in Newcastle have seized illegal motorcycles linked to disorder in the city.

Over the summer residents in Kenton and Cowgate complained about teenagers illegally riding motorcycles in the area.

The noise caused by the bikes led to a surge in reports of anti-social behaviour and police say many of those riding the bikes had no licence or insurance.

Local officers have seized three motorcycles and one car. Two people have been summonsed to court for driving offences.

Eight council owned properties were also visited with Your Homes Newcastle to begin the tenancy enforcement process against those involved in the anti-social behaviour.

PC Loraine, of the Newcastle North West Neighbourhood Policing Team, was supported in the operation by PC Keith Farmer and PCSO Graeme Wilkinson.

He said: "This operation came about due to an influx of reports of vehicles ranging from mini motors to pick-up trucks that were being used without any driving licences, insurance or protective equipment.

"Working injunction with Your Homes Newcastle (YHN) we conducted homes visits to any people caught involved in this disorder and took appropriate action.

"This operation is on-going and we will act on any information provided by members of the public and residents in the area where these vehicles are being used.

"People shouldn’t have to live with this sort of disorder happening, not only in the area which they live, but also the roads and paths which they use.

"The implications of these vehicles not being used correctly can be devastating to families and communities. Local residents should know we are doing everything we can to make people feel safe."
