Alan Shearer: 'I owe Freddy a huge debt'

Ex Newcastle United striker, Alan Shearer has spoken about owing Freddy Shepherd a "huge debt" for bringing him back home.

The Former Newcastle United chairman and businessman passed away on Monday 25, September, age 75.

In an interview with ITV News Tyne Tees, Shearer who was coaxed back to the the Magpies by Shepherd in 1996, for a world-transfer record breaking £15 million, said his death was a "desperately sad day for myself and the city...."

He always backed his managers, he was very passionate, he was very typical of someone from Newcastle who desperately wanted the football club to do well and the area. He was a big promotor of Newcastle itself and he'll be sadly missed."

"I remember sitting down in a room with him about whether to come back to Newcastle and sign with him. He was one of the guys that was so persuasive in bringing me back. Some great memories, but when you forget all of that, he was a great friend."
