A North East Pride of Britain Awards finalist, who decided to walk the 270 mile journey home to County Durham to raise money for charity, has arrived back in the region.

Mark Solan was named the ITV Tyne Tees Fundraiser of the Year in October and represented the region at the national awards ceremony in London.

He left the capital on foot more than two weeks ago and is now making his way through North Yorkshire before returning home to Spennymoor at the weekend.

Mark has taken to the road to raise awareness and money. He set up a charity in Spennymoor that supports people with cancer and their families.

He says he has been overwhelmed by the support he has received and says the gruelling challenge has proved tough at times and left him with injuries but he remains determined to finish.

Three physiotherapists told me to quit. I keep saying the pain I am going through is nothing like the families are going through and when I was asked to quit, how can I pack in and quit when I am facing people going through chemotherapy, radiotherapy or are terminally ill?"
