Four people have been taken to hospital following a serious incident on the A1 near Kenton Bar which has closed the Northbound carriageway.
Emergency services were called at 11:19am to attend the scene of a serious road traffic collision between Kenton Bar and Kingston Park. The North East Ambulance Service confirmed four patients were taken by ambulance to Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary.
The A1 is currently closed northbound between the A696 and the A1056. Northumbria Police say it's expected to remain closed for two to three hours and have urged motorists to avoid the area as investigations continue.
Highways England have advised road users to follow the Solid Black Triangle symbol led diversion. Exit the A1 northbound at the junction for the A696 (J77) and take the 2nd exit off the roundabout onto the B6918. Continue along this road north west (Brunton Lane) to Kingston Park Interchange to re-join the A1 northbound (J78).
Motorists travelling in this direction should allow extra time to complete their journey.
