The British Horseracing Authority (BHA) has said it is looking into the deaths of three horses at Hexham racecourse on Tuesday.

Skywards Reward, Flemerina and Nelly La Rue died in separate incidents in two separate races.

The manager of Hexham racecourse said their sympathies go out to all involved.

Racing's regulator The British Horse Racing Authority takes the welfare of horses and jockeys extremely seriously and as well as promoting "The Horse Comes First Campaign", the BHA have four veterinary and welfare officers present at each race meeting as well as three veterinary officers who are employed by the racecourse.

Whilst there is a level of risk involved in any activity in which horses take part, that level of risk can never be eradicated entirely.

The BHA confirmed it is looking into the deaths but said that Hexham has a good course and also has a low fatality rate, 'well below' the 0.4% national average.

They added that these deaths were an exceptionally rare occurrence.
