Peterlee man who died in Amsterdam named as Dan Sirrell

A talented young footballer from County Durham has died while on holiday in Amsterdam.

He has been named as 21-year-old Dan Sirrell, from Peterlee.

Family and friends are raising money to return his body to the UK Credit: Harton & Westoe FC

It is understood Daniel, known as 'Dan', played for South Tyneside’s Harton and Westoe FC. He been away on holiday with friends when he fell into a river and could not be saved. He died in the early hours of Sunday morning.

His friends are raising money to help his family afford to bring his body home. Ben Cooper has set-up an online crowd-funding page in a bid top raise the £15,000 his family need to bring him home to Peterlee.

The announcement of his death was made via Harton and Westoe FC's football page.

Everyone involved with Harton & Westoe CW FC offer the most sincere condolences to the family and friends of Dan Sirrell.

News came into the club this morning that Dan had passed away following what seems to have been a tragic accident.

Dan was much loved by everyone at our football club and will be greatly missed, both on and off the pitch.

Dan will be remembered by us for being not only a very talented young player, but being a lovely young man liked by all at the club.

Our thoughts particularly go to Dan’s family at this very difficult time.
